St. Philip's History

St. Philip's Episcopal Church (Palestine, Texas) is one of 156 congregations in the Diocese of Texas. We are in a global communion of some 77 million Anglicans in 500 dioceses in 164 countries. The Episcopal Church in the United States is a community of 2.5 million members in 110 dioceses in the United States and 15 countries. If an Anglican church is a member of the Anglican Communion, it is said to be "in communion" or "in communion with the See of Canterbury". St. Philip's is a part of the Anglican Communion through the diocese and through the national church. Churches in the Anglican Communion are bound together in faith.

The faith of the Episcopal Church is the Christian faith as delivered in Holy Scripture and expressed in the ancient creeds of the Church: the Nicene Creed and the Apostle's creed. We call the Holy Scripture THE WORD OF GOD because God inspired the human authors, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and we believe that God still speaks to us through the Holy Bible.

St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Palestine, Texas, was established in 1859 by six families and four individuals and was admitted into the Diocese of Texas on Apri113, 1860 at the eleventh annual diocesan convention at Christ Church, Matagorda, Texas under Bishop Alexander Gregg.

St Philip's Church first occupied a building at the comer of Oak and Sycamore Streets. The cornerstone had been laid by Bishop Gregg on December 19, 1874. By 1909, the church had been moved to its present location. In 1982, the building was destroyed by fire. Within 18 months, the building was replicated almost perfectly to the building that burned, with an additional 25% seating capacity and a tracker-action pipe organ designed and built for St. Philip's. In May, 2008, St. Philip's has completed a new parish hall with a commercial kitchen, updated classrooms, new administrative areas and a magnificent granite-faced columbarium with a lighted cross rising 55 feet into the sky.

The expansion project is one that was started, was built and was completed based on "stepping out in faith" and is an outward and visible symbol of the inward and loving faith this congregation experiences in doing the work Jesus Christ has given us to do.

It has been said, "St. Philip's Episcopal Church of Palestine has, indeed, survived the enduring test of years, still maintaining its air of simplicity and beauty. It is a real symbol of the living presence of God." (The Junior Historian of the Texas State Historical Association, December 1966, p.26)
